Community Advice: Bogus Council Callers

The Dulwich Wood Safer Neighbourhood Team has been made aware of reports of individuals claiming to be from Southwark Council attempting to gain entry to residential properties. When challenged and asked to provide identification, they were unable to do so. The individuals were unsuccessful in gaining entry, and subsequent checks with the council confirmed that no official staff had been sent to the address.

Advice for Residents

Always ask to see official photo identification before allowing anyone into your home.

Do not feel pressured to open the door or let anyone inside.

If you are unsure, keep the door closed and contact the organisation directly using a trusted phone number to verify the visit.

Genuine council staff, utility workers, and other officials should be able to provide identification and explain the purpose of their visit.

Consider using a door chain, door viewer, or video doorbell where possible.

If you feel threatened or believe a crime is in progress, call 999 immediately.

If the incident is suspicious but non-emergency, report it to police on 101 or online at www.met.police.uk.

Please remain vigilant and check in on elderly or vulnerable neighbours who may be more susceptible to this type of activity.

Anyone with information about suspicious callers in the area is encouraged to contact the Dulwich Wood Safer Neighbourhood Team or report it via the Metropolitan Police.
